Description:

The NIO Firefly is a compact five-door electric hatchback and the first model from firefly, the third brand from Chinese automaker NIO after NIO and ONVO. It isn’t sold in Canada and no Canadian launch has been announced, so the specs below are for the first-generation car, on sale in China since April 2025 and in Europe since summer 2025.

Range, Battery, and Charging of the NIO Firefly:

  • A 42.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery (41.2 kWh usable) gives up to 330 km of WLTP range, or 320 km for the Comfort trim, with rated consumption of 14.5 kWh/100 km.
  • DC fast charging peaks at 100 kW, and firefly quotes 29 minutes from 10% to 80%.
  • The onboard AC charger accepts up to 11 kW on three-phase power in Europe, and a full charge from empty takes an estimated 6 hours 30 minutes on a typical Level 2 home charger.
  • Battery swapping works only at NIO’s fifth-generation swap stations, so most European owners will rely on charging, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) can power appliances from the battery.

Powertrain and Performance of the NIO Firefly:

  • A single 105 kW motor drives the rear wheels and makes 200 Nm of torque.
  • The brand quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h.
  • The five-link independent rear suspension was tuned with Canadian engineering firm Multimatic, and the steering is precise and the ride more European than most small Chinese EVs.
  • The Firefly is 4,003 mm long, 1,781 mm wide and 1,557 mm tall, on a 2,615 mm wheelbase, and firefly’s Greek specification sheet gives a 9.4 m turning circle.

Technology and Features of the NIO Firefly:

  • Automatic parking and remote parking are offered.
  • Highway driving assistance is offered, although equipment varies by market.
  • In Europe, the Comfort trim adds a 50 W wireless phone charger and a power tailgate over the Select trim.
  • The Comfort trim also adds a panoramic glass roof and ventilated, massaging front seats.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Firefly isn't sold in Canada, and as of October 24, 2026, neither NIO nor its firefly brand has announced a Canadian launch or date, although the company has talked about expanding into North America. It's sold in Europe, starting with the Netherlands and Norway in 2025, and right-hand-drive production began for Singapore in late 2025. Our guide to Chinese EVs in Canada tracks which brands and models are expected.
Both, in a sense: firefly is NIO's third brand, after the premium NIO brand and the family-focused ONVO, and the Firefly is its first model. The brand writes its name in lowercase and positions the car as a premium small hatchback, kept separate so the NIO name stays upmarket. It shares NIO's battery-swap technology but has its own design and sits below NIO-brand models such as the NIO EL6 in the lineup.
The first-generation Firefly uses a 42.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, of which 41.2 kWh is usable, and is rated at up to 330 km on the European WLTP cycle, or 320 km for the Comfort trim. Rated consumption is 14.5 kWh/100 km, and the higher Chinese CLTC figures you may see quoted aren't comparable with WLTP. In China, a larger 60 kWh battery option was added in October 2026; it has not been announced for Europe. Cold weather reduces the range of any EV, so expect noticeably less in a Canadian winter.
On a DC fast charger, charging peaks at 100 kW and firefly quotes 29 minutes from 10% to 80%. The onboard AC charger accepts up to 11 kW on three-phase power in Europe, but Canadian homes use single-phase power, so a full charge from empty takes an estimated 6 hours 30 minutes on a typical Level 2 home charger. To plan home charging, try the EV charging cost calculator.
Yes, but only at NIO's fifth-generation swap stations; older stations can't swap it. In Europe these stations are still scarce, so most owners will charge like any other EV, and there's no NIO swap network in Canada. In China, NIO also offers a battery-as-a-service plan, in which the battery is rented rather than owned.
Yes, for a car this size. Rear headroom is enough for tall passengers even with the glass roof, and rear seating is impressive for the class. Thigh support in the back is limited for taller adults, and very tall drivers may find the front seats and driving position on the small side.
A single 105 kW motor drives the rear wheels with 200 Nm of torque, and the brand quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h. It's brisk in town and adequate on the highway, though the Sport and Normal modes can feel jerky at highway speeds.
The Firefly is 4,003 mm long, 1,781 mm wide and 1,557 mm tall, on a 2,615 mm wheelbase, with a 9.4 m turning circle. The brand lists 404 L of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,253 L with them folded, plus a front trunk with a drain hole for wet or muddy gear. The rear seat cushions also flip up for a flat load floor, and there are storage bins under the seats.
Euro NCAP gave the Firefly five stars in 2025, with scores of 96% for adult occupants, 87% for children, 82% for vulnerable road users and 86% for safety assistance. Euro NCAP said the adult score was the highest of any passenger car it had tested since the start of 2024. There are no North American crash-test ratings for the Firefly.
In Europe, the Firefly competes with the electric Mini Cooper E, the Renault 5 E-Tech and the Volkswagen ID.Polo, and in China with the Smart #1 and the BYD Seagull. Its ride and steering feel more European than most Chinese EVs, its cabin more premium than its size suggests and its packaging cleverer, with a front trunk and slide-across front cabin. It faces strong competition from the Renault 5 and ID.Polo, and its range is typical of the class rather than ahead of it.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

With the motor at the back, the front wheels turn unusually sharply, and the brand's 9.4 m turning circle makes U-turns and tight parking spots easy.
Beyond the 404 L rear cargo area, there's a front trunk with a drain hole, rear seat cushions that flip up for a flat load floor and bins under the seats, so the small body holds a lot.
An open floor between the front seats lets the driver slide over and get out on the passenger side when parked against a wall or another car.
The steering is quick and precise and the ride settled, thanks to the five-link rear suspension and chassis tuning by Canadian engineering firm Multimatic.
Soft-touch surfaces, solid build, a sharp centre screen and comfortable seats make the cabin feel more upscale than the car's size suggests.
Euro NCAP gave the Firefly five stars in 2025 and said its 96% adult occupant score was the highest of any passenger car it had tested since the start of 2024.
The one-pedal mode and the choice of regenerative braking levels make stop-and-go city driving easy.

Cons:

Up to 330 km of WLTP range is typical for the class, and the 100 kW DC peak isn't the fastest and doesn't last long during a charging session.
Swapping works only at NIO's fifth-generation stations, which are scarce in Europe, and there's no NIO swap network in Canada.
Many functions sit in the touchscreen, and the driver-assistance warnings are insistent enough that some drivers switch them off on every drive.
