The Science Behind EV Battery Degradation

Key Factors Wearing Your EV Battery

Lithium-ion battery degradation is driven by several factors. Our model captures the most significant ones and combines them into a single State of Health score.

Charge Cycle Wear

Every time an EV battery is charged and discharged, microscopic chemical and structural changes occur inside the battery cells. Over time, repeated charging cycles gradually reduce the battery’s ability to store energy.Higher vehicle mileage generally means more charge cycles, leading to increased battery capacity loss and reduced driving range.

Calendar Aging

EV batteries naturally age over time, even when the vehicle is rarely driven. Chemical reactions continue slowly inside the battery cells, causing lithium ions to become permanently unavailable. This type of degradation, known as calendar aging, is affected by battery age, average state of charge, and long-term exposure to heat.

Temperature & Climate Stress

High temperatures accelerate unwanted chemical reactions that increase EV battery degradation, while extremely cold temperatures can increase internal resistance and raise the risk of lithium plating during charging. Our model uses real climate data from major Canadian cities to estimate long-term battery thermal stress based on local seasonal temperatures.

DC Fast Charging Stress

Frequent DC fast charging exposes the battery to high charging currents and additional heat, which can accelerate battery wear over time.Fast charging in cold weather can be particularly stressful because lithium plating becomes more likely at low temperatures. Our model increases this degradation factor for colder climates and higher fast-charging usage.

Other Factors That Can Influence EV Battery Health

Several additional factors may also affect long-term battery performance and degradation:

  • Battery chemistry and cell design
  • Battery thermal management system quality
  • Driving habits and aggressive acceleration
  • Frequent charging to 100% or deep discharging
  • Long-term storage at very high or low charge levels
  • Vehicle software and battery management strategies
  • Towing, heavy loads, and high-performance driving
  • Manufacturing differences between battery packs

Note: This estimate is intended to provide a general view of your EV battery’s condition based on real-world battery aging factors and scientific degradation models. Actual battery health may differ from vehicle to vehicle. To determine the precise battery State of Health (SOH) of your electric vehicle, a professional battery health test or diagnostic scan should be performed.

Why EV Battery Health Matters

Before You Buy, Sell, or Plan

EV battery health is one of the most important factors affecting electric vehicle range, performance, charging speed, long-term reliability, and resale value. Understanding battery degradation helps EV owners and buyers make smarter decisions about used EV purchases, ownership costs, road trips, charging habits, and warranty coverage.

Buying Used

Battery health directly affects a used electric vehicle’s real-world driving range and long-term value. Understanding EV battery degradation helps buyers compare used EVs more accurately and avoid unexpected range loss or reduced battery performance.

Selling Your EV

A healthy EV battery can improve resale value and increase buyer confidence. Showing estimated battery condition and remaining battery capacity helps demonstrate the long-term reliability and usability of your electric vehicle.

Warranty Claims

Most EV manufacturers provide battery warranties based on battery degradation or minimum State of Health (SOH). Monitoring battery condition can help owners identify abnormal battery capacity loss and support potential EV battery warranty claims.

Trip Planning

Battery degradation can reduce usable driving range over time, especially in cold weather. Knowing your EV battery health helps with route planning, charging stop planning, and estimating real-world range during long-distance travel.

Canadian Climate

Cold winters and hot summer temperatures can significantly impact EV battery performance and long-term battery degradation. Canada’s climate makes local weather conditions an important factor in overall EV battery health.

Charging Habits

Frequent DC fast charging, charging to 100%, and extreme temperatures can accelerate EV battery wear. Understanding battery health encourages better charging practices that can help preserve battery capacity and extend battery life.

FAQ

Common Questions

This is a physics-based model, not a direct measurement. It uses empirical constants calibrated to real-world EV fleet data. Treat results as a well-informed estimate within ±5–8% SoH. For a precise reading, use an OBD-II diagnostic tool or consult your dealer.

Temperature is one of the most significant factors in lithium-ion battery aging. Heat above 25°C accelerates all chemical reactions; cold below 5°C risks lithium plating during charging. Our model accounts for this using 10 years of real observed climate data per city.

Choose the nearest city with a similar climate. If you're in a small Saskatchewan town, choose Saskatoon or Regina. Coastal cities tend to be milder (Vancouver, Victoria), while inland Prairie cities are colder and drier.

Not necessarily. Occasional DC fast charging (under 20% of sessions) adds relatively little extra degradation. The bigger risk is fast charging when the battery is very cold.

Above 90% is excellent. 80–90% is typical after 5–7 years of normal use. Below 75% starts to meaningfully reduce usable range. Most manufacturers warranty against falling below 70–75% within 8 years or 160,000 km.

The model uses general lithium-ion degradation physics and is a reasonable estimate for most modern EVs. LFP batteries (some Tesla Model 3, BYD) degrade more slowly and this model may slightly overestimate their degradation.
