Description:

The Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is a five-seat compact luxury sedan built on an 800-volt electric architecture, with an 85 kWh battery in both Canadian trims. The rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ is tuned for maximum range, while the dual-motor CLA 350 4MATIC adds all-wheel drive and quicker acceleration.

Range, Battery, and Charging of the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric:

  • Estimated range is up to 602 km for the CLA 250+ and up to 502 km for the CLA 350 4MATIC, based on NRCan-approved test guidelines.
  • Both trims accept up to 320 kW on a DC fast charger, and Mercedes lists 22 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge.
  • Under optimal conditions, Mercedes says 15 to 20 minutes of DC fast charging can add roughly 300 to 350 km of range.
  • A NACS port handles DC fast charging, including at compatible Tesla Superchargers, and a separate J1772 port takes Level 2 charging at up to 9.6 kW.
  • Through the MB.CHARGE Public service, owners can charge on several networks, including ChargePoint, FLO and Tesla Superchargers.

Powertrain and Performance of the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric:

  • The CLA 250+ uses a single 200 kW rear motor rated at 268 hp and 335 Nm (247 lb-ft), and reaches 100 km/h from rest in 6.6 seconds.
  • The CLA 350 4MATIC adds a front motor that engages for extra power or traction, raising output to 260 kW (349 hp) and 515 Nm (380 lb-ft) for a 4.9-second 0 to 100 km/h time.
  • Both trims use a two-speed transmission, which reviewers describe as a short first gear for strong launches and a taller second gear for efficient highway cruising.
  • Regenerative braking is set with the drive selector, with three levels (normal, increased and none, which lets the car coast), plus a D Auto mode that uses the intelligent ECO Assistant to adjust recovery to traffic ahead.
  • Four-wheel multilink suspension with comfort tuning is fitted to both trims, which turn in a tight 11.2 m circle.

Technology and Features of the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric:

  • The fourth-generation MBUX system uses AI from Microsoft and Google across the displays, touch controls and voice assistant, so it responds to more natural, conversational commands.
  • Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans routes around traffic, terrain, temperature and charging stops, and it is a Digital Extra with seven years of service included.
  • Included Premium equipment covers a fixed panoramic glass roof, a heated steering wheel, memory front seats, Blind Spot Assist and Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, also a Digital Extra.
  • Optional Exclusive and Pinnacle packages add features such as KEYLESS-GO, a digital vehicle key, dual wireless phone charging, a head-up display, a 360-degree parking camera and a 14-inch passenger display.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly, and Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise can brake to a stop and resume in stop-and-go traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the trim. The rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ has an estimated range of up to 602 km, and the all-wheel-drive CLA 350 4MATIC is rated at up to 502 km, both using Natural Resources Canada test guidelines. Both trims carry the same 85 kWh battery, so the difference comes from the 350's second motor, bigger wheels and extra weight. Real-world results so far are encouraging: on a 229 km mix of backroads and highway in Ontario, The Globe and Mail's CLA 350 4MATIC averaged about 13 kWh/100 km, a pace that would beat its rating, and AutoTrader.ca recorded about 14.8 kWh/100 km over a warm summer day of driving in the same trim. Expect less in cold weather and at sustained high speeds.
Both trims are built on an 800-volt architecture and can accept up to 320 kW on a compatible DC fast charger. Mercedes lists 22 minutes to go from 10% to 80%, and says that under optimal conditions 15 to 20 minutes can add roughly 300 to 350 km of range. Real charging speeds depend on the charger's output, the battery's temperature and its state of charge: in The Globe and Mail's Canadian test, a 15-minute Tesla Supercharger stop added enough energy for about 134 km, so a cold battery or a busy or lower-powered station will deliver less than the best-case figure. Navigation with Electric Intelligence factors charging stops and temperature into its route planning.
The car has a 9.6 kW onboard charger and a J1772 port for Level 2 charging, so it plugs into most home and public Level 2 stations without an adapter. Mercedes-Benz Canada hasn't yet published an official Level 2 charging time. The figure in the specifications table on this page is an estimate from a secondary source, and we'll update it once Mercedes confirms it. To get the full 9.6 kW, you'll need a Level 2 charger and circuit that can supply it; a lower-powered home charger will take longer. Use our EV charging cost calculator to estimate what home charging will cost you.
Yes. The CLA Electric has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for DC fast charging, the same type Tesla uses, so it can plug in at compatible Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. A second port, a J1772 connector, handles Level 2 charging. Mercedes's MB.CHARGE Public service, set up through the Mercedes-Benz app, also gives access to other networks, including ChargePoint and FLO.
The CLA 250+ has a single 200 kW (268 hp) rear motor, 335 Nm of torque and reaches 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds; it has the longer range, at up to 602 km. The CLA 350 4MATIC adds a front motor for 260 kW (349 hp), 515 Nm and a 4.9-second sprint to 100 km/h, along with all-wheel drive, but its range is rated at up to 502 km. The front motor engages when more power or traction is needed, so the 350 runs mostly on its rear motor when cruising. Both share the same battery, charging speeds, two-speed transmission and cabin, while the 350 rides on 18-inch wheels instead of 17-inch ones.
It can be, with some planning. The CLA 350 4MATIC's all-wheel drive brings in the front motor when traction is needed, which helps on snowy or icy roads, while the rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ relies on good tires and the car's stability systems. Mercedes lists range-optimized summer tires on the standard wheels, so a set of winter tires is a sensible purchase, and in Quebec winter tires are required by law in the winter months. Like any EV, the CLA Electric will see less range in the cold, and most published tests so far were run in mild conditions. The navigation system accounts for temperature when it plans charging stops, and a heated steering wheel comes with the included Premium equipment. Mercedes also lists a heat pump, heated front seats and heated wiper blades as standard on both trims, which help with cabin warm-up and clear visibility in winter.
The CLA Electric runs Mercedes's fourth-generation MBUX system, which uses AI from Microsoft and Google in its displays, touch controls and voice assistant. A driver display and a central touchscreen are standard, and the Pinnacle package adds a 14-inch passenger display, a head-up display and a 360-degree parking camera. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly as standard. Navigation with Electric Intelligence (seven years included) and Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, which can brake to a stop and resume in traffic, are activated as Digital Extras through a Mercedes me ID. Most Digital Extras can be renewed for a fee once their initial term ends.
The trunk holds 405 L, and a 101 L front trunk under the hood adds space for groceries, small bags or charging cables, which reviewers found more useful than they expected. The rear seatbacks fold to carry longer items, and the Pinnacle package adds a power-closing trunk with hands-free access. Up front, reviewers describe comfortable, supportive seats, and The Globe and Mail found generous front headroom despite the battery under the floor. The rear seat is best suited to children or shorter adults: reviewers found the floor high, which leaves taller passengers with their knees raised and little thigh support, and headroom tightens under the sloping roof.
The CLA Electric suits drivers who want a compact luxury sedan with long range and fast charging, especially those who cover long highway distances or don't want to plan around frequent charging stops. The CLA 250+ makes the most sense if range matters most, while the CLA 350 4MATIC fits drivers who want all-wheel-drive traction and quicker acceleration. Buyers who regularly carry tall adults in the back, or need SUV-style cargo space, may find a crossover a better fit.
Pricing differs between the CLA 250+ and the CLA 350 4MATIC, and the specifications table on this page lists the current MSRP for each trim. MSRP doesn't include freight, PDI, dealer fees or taxes, and the optional Exclusive and Pinnacle packages add to the total, so ask for an all-in price before you compare offers. Federal and provincial EV incentives, where available, can depend on the exact trim and configuration, so check current program rules on our EV incentives page before you buy.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

The CLA 250+ has an estimated range of up to 602 km and the CLA 350 4MATIC up to 502 km, so long highway days between charges are realistic for both trims.
An 800-volt system accepts up to 320 kW, and Mercedes lists 22 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge on either trim.
A built-in NACS port works at compatible Tesla Superchargers, a separate J1772 port handles Level 2 stations, and MB.CHARGE Public covers networks such as ChargePoint and FLO.
On a 229 km Canadian road trip, The Globe and Mail's CLA 350 4MATIC used about 13 kWh/100 km, a pace that would beat its rated range, and AutoTrader.ca and overseas reviewers also report strong efficiency.
Several reviewers found the front seats supportive and comfortable on longer drives, with good bolstering on twisty roads.
The 101 L front trunk adds to the 405 L trunk, and reviewers fit groceries, small bags or charging cables up front.

Cons:

The CLA 350 4MATIC carries the same 85 kWh battery but is rated up to 502 km, about 100 km less than the CLA 250+, in exchange for its extra traction and quicker acceleration.
Most published tests were run in mild conditions, and Mercedes notes that temperature and weather affect range, so expect lower figures in a Canadian winter and plan longer trips with that in mind.
Mercedes lists range-optimized summer tires on the standard 17-inch (CLA 250+) and 18-inch (CLA 350 4MATIC) wheels, so budget for a set of winter tires for the cold months.
The rear floor sits high, leaving taller adults with knees raised, little thigh support and limited headroom under the sloping roof, though it suits children and shorter trips well.
Climate settings sit on the touchscreen and the rear windows use a toggle on the driver's door, and several reviewers, including The Globe and Mail, felt the glossy black panels and some hard plastics fall short of what they expect from a Mercedes.
