Charging an electric vehicle in Canada is significantly cheaper than fuelling a gas-powered car, but costs vary widely depending on where you charge, when you charge, and which province you live in. This tool helps you estimate all three scenarios so you can plan and budget confidently.
The cheapest option. Most EV owners do 80–90% of charging overnight using a Level 1 or Level 2 home charger. Costs follow your residential electricity rate, which ranges from ~4 ¢/kWh Ultra-Low Overnight rate in Ontario to ~40+ ¢/kWh in the NWT.

In contrast, Alberta’s competitive retail electricity market utilizes a natural-gas heavy generation mix. While its default “Rate of Last Resort” provides a capped energy charge of 12.0¢/kWh through 2026, additional distribution, transmission, and rider fees can elevate final, delivered household billing past 20¢–25¢/kWh. Similarly, Atlantic provinces like Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island face above-average residential expenses due to significant dependence on imported fossil fuels and localized generation challenges.
Public charging costs are further influenced by commercial electricity rates (which are higher than residential), demand charges, network operator margins, and the local regulatory environment. Provinces like British Columbia and Québec, where utilities operate the charging networks directly, tend to have more competitive public rates.
Across Canada, the average EV driver travelling 15,000 km per year spends roughly $400–$800 on home charging — compared to $1,800–$2,400 for an equivalent gas vehicle at $1.60/L. Even in high-rate provinces like Alberta, home EV charging remains substantially cheaper per kilometre than gasoline. In Québec and Manitoba, the savings are even more dramatic, with home charging costs sometimes as low as $2 per 100 km driven.
Ontario’s Time-of-Use pricing offers an additional opportunity: the Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) rate of ~4¢/kWh (11 PM–7 AM) makes overnight EV charging one of the cheapest electricity uses in the country. Scheduling your charge to run overnight on a smart charger is one of the most effective ways to minimize charging costs.
